SPORT RELIEF: WHAT TO DO WHEN IT RAINS

Got big plans for Sport Relief week? Sport Relief 2018 takes place on 19-23 March, and at this time of year, it’s hard to know what to expect from the weather. If you’re looking forward to Sport Relief 2018 but wondering what to do in case it rains, be sure to put a Plan B in place with these wet play ideas for a rainy day.

Indoor games

There’s no need to cancel your Sport Relief activities if it rains – simply bring them indoors! There’s loads of active fun to be had in the classroom or sports hall, and schools can take advantage of the free resources available on the Sport Relief website.

  • Give the classroom a Sport Relief school makeover. Get the children to cut out and put up Sport Relief bunting – downloadable for free from the Sport Relief Challenge Kit.
  • Clear the room. Move aside the tables and chairs, put on some music and challenge the children to a workout! There are lots of suitable exercise videos available on YouTube and elsewhere on the internet. We like this Joe Wicks School HIIT workout.
  • Exercise their minds. Download a Sport Relief classroom games pack for some desk-based fun.
  • Create your own sports quiz. Some Sport Relief ideas can help children learn about new sports. Why not bring in different types of sports equipment, and let the class guess which sport they go with?
  • Move and groove. Young children will benefit from the exercise they get from dancing to their favourite tunes. Hold a Sport Relief disco in the classroom or assembly hall, and introduce children to the fun that can be had from getting active to music.

ALTERNATIVE VENUES

If you don’t have a suitable space within the school grounds, consider taking a trip to a local indoor sports centre or swimming pool. You could organise a rain-proof swimming gala or indoor sports day – with plenty of space for parents to come along and watch. Consider teaming up with other local schools or community groups, to organise a joint Sport Relief extravaganza.

Embrace the rain

Rain doesn’t always have to stop play. You might simply need to be prepared! With the right wet-weather gear, there’s lots of fun to be had outdoors, even when it rains. Although it may be unwise to set the kids free on a muddy sports field, the playground can still be a great venue for Sport Relief at your school, especially if you have a sheltered area. If you’re going ahead with an outdoor sports activity, be sure to warn parents ahead of time, to make sure everyone turns up with the appropriate clothing and footwear.
