BESPOKE: The Percival Music Centre, Birmingham

King Edward VI Camp Hill School for Girls is a grammar school in Birmingham, and they needed a new building to house the music department. There was only one suitable location for it on the site, and it was an unusual shape – a wedge of land between an access road and car parking spaces on one side, and the boundary wall on the other. Vertis designed the building to fit the space, and clad it to match the surrounding buildings.

Key features

The Percival Music Centre, named after a former headteacher, has two large teaching classrooms and six smaller rooms for individual tuition and practice. To ensure that multiple users don’t disturb each other, the rooms were sound-proofed with layers of acoustic insulation incorporated into the walls, while the doors have acoustic door seals around the frame.

“The sound-proofing seems to be very effective, confirms Prue Hawthorne, head of music at the school. “This new building is very exciting. It’s spacious, it’s light, you feel more in control. I can see everybody clearly and hear everybody clearly - it’s exceeded my expectations.”

The building also has an office, a small kitchen area for staff, a toilet, and an entrance lobby. A building services cupboard keeps cabling neatly in one place, with room for cleaning materials storage.

In the classrooms, rows of sockets accommodate the banks of keyboards and computers. Lots of natural light pours in through the large windows – which are A rated for energy efficiency, laminated safety glass, and with anti-finger-trap hinges for the safety of students.
